Horticulture

When first starting this course I wasn't really sure what to expect. I thought that maybe we would have a few planters in the window and then plant a garden in the spring. You can imagine my surprise when I walked in that first day and saw all of the growing equipment that our teacher had ordered. From lights, to growing enclosures we seemed to have them all at our disposal. We started by planting a few plants that we'd hoped to transplant into our outdoor garden and even our greenhouse. We mixed our own potting soil and very carefully read the instructions on the back of each seed pack to ensure the best results. Our plants reside in our growing enclosures and are taken care of by the students enrolled in the class. So far we have planted things like pumpkins, cucumbers, watermelons, garlic and sunflowers. But we've only just started. Our teacher just recently ordered a tower garden! This tower is special in that it holds plants vertically with very little dirt and speeds up the growing time of whatever you plant in it because it is indoors. We hope to plants herbs and lettuces in the tower garden and maybe even harvest them before the school year ends. I guess only "thyme" will tell!
