New Myrnam School Receives the BP A+ For Energy Grant for their Project, Sustainable Greenhouse &
We are very excited to announce that New Myrnam School received a BP A+ for Energy grant for $10,000 for the 2017-18 school year. The award is for the school’s project Sustainable Greenhouse and Garden, which will see students in grades 7-12 completing a variety of tasks and projects. The main goal of this project is for students to design, implement, and maintain an environmentally sustainable and self-sufficient green space on the school grounds, which will function as an evolving outdoor learning environment. Students will also be able to learn first-hand about sustainable food production and nutrition. Students will meet the following goals in the 2017-2018 school year:
Create a passive solar heating system for the greenhouse.
Create a self-watering system that utilizes rainwater.
Create a non-traditional, high-efficiency growing system to increase food crop yields.
Students will modify the existing greenhouse structure to retain heat energy captured during daylight hours to be released during the night and cold winter months, thereby learning about energy conservation and efficiency. Students will also explore two other problems throughout the year: first, students will design a system for harvesting rainwater to create an automatic and efficient watering system for the greenhouse. Additionally, students will be tasked with designing an efficient method for growing vegetables throughout the winter months through researching and developing technology such as hydroponics and aeroponics.
In addition to learning from and with their teachers, students will also have the opportunity to learn with science experts, including Rob Baron, Lead Researcher, Energy Research at Lakeland College. Making these connections with experts and college instructors will deepen students’ learning, while also helping to prepare them for post-secondary education.
