Orange Shirt Day

On October 4th, students and staff of the New Myrnam School and the Myrnam Outreach & Homeschool Centre put on their Orange Shirts and became one in support of Reconcililation for those affected by the negative impacts of residential schools.

During the event, which was led by our grade nine students under the guidance of Mrs. Owen, along with special guest Mr. Clifford Cardinal and his accompaniment of drummers, one could hear from individuals and families through videos and stories of what it was like in some residential schools.

Also during this event students and staff of NMS & MOHC held their Treaty 6 Land Acknowledgement ceremony. We heard through student research the relevance and importance of this Treaty which was signed in 1876 by Crown representatives and members of the Cree, Assiniboine and Ojibwa leaders. This Treaty 6 Land covers the areas of present-day central to eastern Alberta into central to southern Saskatchewan. As part of our Land Acknowledgement ceremony, our school was gifted with a Treaty 6 sign, which will hang permanently in our school foyer. The hand-painted symbol can be seen in the foyer of our school.
